The 16th Suzhou Sports Meeting was wrapped up on Nov. 26. Ji Jing, director of the organizing committee of the sports meeting and vice mayor of Suzhou, attended the closing ceremony.
The Suzhou Sports Meeting, founded in December 1949, is the largest of its kind in terms of the scale and the number of events with the most extensive influence in the city, which has attracted wide attention from local sports enthusiasts. This year’s sports meeting, which started in April, was divided into 2 parts, one for students and the other for adults, including 164 events in 12 categories. It attracted nearly 25,000 participants who competed in different groups for students, urban workers, employees of foreign-funded enterprises, the disabled, the elderly, retired soldiers, etc.
During this year’s sports meeting, a themed train was launched on Suzhou Rail Transit (SRT) Line 5 and themed decorations were set up at Laodonglu Station to help create an immersive sports atmosphere. In addition, the Suzhou Sports Museum held a one-month sports culture exhibition, which helped visitors learn more about the efforts and achievements Suzhou has made over the past 4 years in promoting the national fitness campaign and healthy development of the sports industry. The organizing committee also held a sports science conference, bringing together researchers, professionals and practitioners in such fields as sports science, health and physical education to have a fruitful and academic discussion based on their research works and experiences.
This year is an “Olympic Year”. Five Suzhou athletes who participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris were invited to the opening ceremony of the Suzhou Sports Meeting, where they shared their Olympic stories to further ignite public interest in sports.
